LACDMH is excited to be part of a pilot program to train clinicians to provide Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, which uses guided eye movements to help process traumatic experiences. With growing evidence demonstrating EMDR’s effectiveness in treating trauma-related distress and challenges, there is an increased demand for EMDR-trained clinicians in mental health settings. This need is especially pronounced in populations and communities with high rates of trauma.
As part of this pilot, LACDMH will provide 30 clinicians with training and support to implement EMDR therapy as part of their practice beginning in Spring/Summer 2025.
We invite you learn more about how EMDR works by reviewing the links and FAQs below.
What is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy is a psychotherapeutic approach designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories. It involves the use of guided eye movements to help reprocess and integrate traumatic experiences.
How does EMDR therapy work?
EMDR therapy works by stimulating the brain’s natural healing processes. During a session, the therapist will guide you through a series of eye movements while you focus on a traumatic memory. This process helps to reduce the emotional charge of the memory and integrate it into your overall life experience.
Who can benefit from EMDR therapy?
EMDR therapy is effective for individuals who have experienced trauma, including those with PTSD, anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions. It can be beneficial for both adults and children.
How long does EMDR therapy take?
The length of EMDR therapy varies depending on the individual and the complexity of their trauma. Some people may experience significant improvement in just a few sessions, while others may require more extended treatment.
Is EMDR therapy safe?
Yes, EMDR therapy is considered safe when conducted by a trained and licensed therapist. It is a well-researched and evidence-based treatment for trauma and other mental health issues.
What should I expect during an EMDR therapy session?
During an EMDR session, you will work with your therapist to identify a specific traumatic memory to target. The therapist will then guide you through a series of eye movements while you focus on the memory. You may also be asked to notice any thoughts, feelings, or sensations that arise during the process.
Are there any side effects of EMDR therapy?
Some individuals may experience mild side effects, such as increased emotional sensitivity or vivid dreams, following an EMDR session. These effects are typically temporary and should be discussed with your therapist.
How effective is EMDR therapy?
EMDR therapy has been shown to be highly effective in treating trauma and related conditions. Many individuals experience significant reductions in symptoms and improvements in overall well-being after completing EMDR therapy.
Can EMDR therapy be combined with other treatments?
Yes, EMDR therapy can be used in conjunction with other therapeutic approaches, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or medication management, to provide comprehensive care for individuals with complex mental health needs.
