Client Leadership Class in Service Area Three and Service Area Six
By Catherine Bond, M.F.T, Director, Empowerment & Advocacy Division
The Client Leadership Training program, Unlock Your Potential, is off to a great start. Sponsored by the LACDMH Empowerment & Advocacy Division with technical assistance from the Program Support Bureau, this class is designed specifically for use by mental health clients by Dr. Jim Silva.
The two groups are being held at ENKI Health & Research Systems in SA 3 and at Augustus Hawkins in SA 6. A total of 34 participants attended the first full-day training, approximately half of whom came from contract agencies and four of whom are Transitional Age Youth (TAY).
Dr. Silva worked with participants on identifying the “One Big Thing” they want to change in order to become better leaders. LACDMH employees, Dr. Marta Alquijay and Treva Blackwell, shared stories of one of their “unsung” leaders and began the process of helping people identify ways in which they might want to volunteer in their communities in future.
