FREE YOUR MIND PROJECTS RADIO SHOW FEATURES CLAIRE MERRILL FROM THE RECOVERY PANEL AT SFVCMHC, Inc.

Tune in to CBS radio station KFWB, 980 AM, Saturday, February 9th and listen to the LACDMH sponsored Free Your Mind Projects Radio Show from 7:00-8:00 P.M. The show is the first of two parts highlighting the success of Recovery Panel members at the San Fernando Valley Community Mental Health Center, Inc. (SFVMHC) Client Run Center (CRC). The Recovery Panel is made up of persons in recovery who practice hope, self-determination and the ability to take personal responsibility. The panel visits schools and other community groups to share stories of recovery, highlighting the use of effective tools, such as the use of a Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP). When speaking publicly, the panel stresses that recovery is a journey of healing and transformation enabling one to live a full and meaningful life in the community while striving to achieve their fullest potential.

The show will feature the inspiring story of Claire Merrill, Certified Psychiatric Recovery Practitioner (CPRC). Claire heard and saw “ghosts” for many years before seeking professional help. After a bad break-up with her boyfriend in college, Claire sought help and was prescribed an anti-depressant, which only increased the amount of voices she was hearing. “Instead of hearing only two voices, I now had a party going on in my head,” she recalled.

Eventually, Claire was placed on a low grade anti-psychotic medication and received Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and improved. She credits a large part of her recovery to decreasing the isolation she found herself in; she needed to “find friends,” and eventually found her way to a welcoming community at the San Fernando Valley Community Mental Health Center, Inc. (SFVMHC) in the Client Run Center (CRC). Claire currently teaches a poetry group and Tai Chi at the CRC in Van Nuys. Claire was recently taken off Social Security Disability after 18 years, a major accomplishment of her hope, wellness and recovery.
