Transforming Tragedy
Transforming Tragedy, the new website commissioned by the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health and hosted by the UCLA Center for the Study of Public Mental Health, tells the story of the transformation of mental health services in LA County since 1960, 
set within the context of the broader history of mental illness in California in the last century and a half. The site includes oral history interviews; a historical timeline; photographs; many original documents from County and State archives, MHA, NAMI, and Project Return: The Next Step, and many other features. A particular highlight is Thriving, a video interweaving the personal stories of six mental health clients. The website is an ongoing collaboration between UCLA and LAC-DMH, to help students, researchers, and members of the community learn more about the realities of mental illness and mental health care; to reduce stigma and discrimination through understanding; and to allow the many diverse voices of the mental health community to be heard.
